A Message from CEO & President Dr. Magali Haas

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Our work is more important now than ever. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on our lives for more than a year, and the impact on brain health is clear. Research is showing that stress, depression, and suicide are on the rise, while the long-term impacts of COVID on the brain are unknown.

What we do know is that brain health matters—and it is essential for our wellness.

As we close out this year and look toward the next, let’s think about what we should collectively invest to ensure that we maintain and optimize brain health across our lifetimes. How do we advocate that governments prioritize the mental wellness of their citizens— putting Brain Health and Brain Capital at the top of their policy and funding agendas? How do we ensure that companies understand the critical role they play as well? The “great resignation” is a symptom of a system that failed to optimize work-life balance. Finally, how do we transform our healthcare model so that brain health is recognized as part of physical health?

Together, and individually, we can raise our voices to drive a future where preventive and treatment solutions are prioritized and accelerated through global collaboration.

As we enter the holidays, I hope you take time to rest, reflect, and re-energize.

In the new year, I invite you to join forces to advance brain health for all!  Cohen Veterans Bioscience will be there to help lead the fight.

With best wishes,

Magali Haas, MD, PhDMagali Haas, MD, PhD

2021 Research Impact: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

metabolomics iconMetabolites offer significant promise as biomarkers for PTSD, but realizing their true potential is dependent on being able to measure them accurately and consistently from one patient to the next. Through RAPID-Dx, our flagship biomarker discovery initiative aimed at fast-tracking precision diagnostics and therapeutics for brain diseases, we identified the metabolite platforms with optimal performance based on the specific metabolites of interest for PTSD.

2021 Research Impact: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Brain Trauma BlueprintThe Brain Trauma Blueprint is a framework that enables stakeholder groups across government, academia, foundations, and industry to advance precision diagnostics and treatments for TBI through a coordinated effort. Authored by leading experts in the TBI field, a series of papers published in the Journal of Neurotrauma lay the framework for a roadmap to advance the field. Watch Highlights from the State of the Science Summit

Veterans Discuss TBI

Quote from Brent Lake

The Veterans behind 22 Jumps know first-hand that the “invisible wounds of war” are not so invisible. The prevalence of TBI in the military community and TBI’s link to suicide risk have galvanized these Veterans to take action and raise funds to advance our TBI research efforts.

2021 Advocacy Impact

Advocating to Accelerate Research & Improve Lives

AdvocacyCVB partnered with the American Brain Coalition and several other leading brain health organizations to advocate for two bills that would lay the foundation for the creation of a Neuroscience Center of Excellence at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • In July, we signed on with over 100+ organizations in a letter to Representatives Diana DeGette and Fred Upton, applauding them for including language that will pave the way for a Neuroscience Center of Excellence at the FDA in Section 306 of the 21st Century Cures 2.0 Act.

  • In October, we again joined with 100+ organizations thanking Representatives Blumenauer, Pascrell, and Bacon for introducing the Bringing Regulatory Advances Into Neuroscience (BRAIN) Act, which would establish a Neuroscience Center of Excellence at the FDA.

  • In November, we applauded Representatives DeGette and Upton for prioritizing patients in the newly released draft of the Cures 2.0. This legislation directs the FDA to create two new intercenter institutes, including one that will address diseases and conditions of the brain and central nervous system.

  • In the coming months, we will continue to join with the entire brain health community to ensure passage of these bills, paving a new era for innovation in brain health diagnosis and treatment.

Last month, members of the Veterans Advisory Council (VAC), traveled to Capitol Hill and met with Congressional leaders and staffers to advocate for a better approach to research the invisible wounds of war – PTSD and TBI.

The Hill Day supported CVB's advocacy efforts as part of the Coalition to Heal Invisible Wounds, and their message centered around four driving principles:

  1. Improve Veterans' Access to High-Quality Mental Health Care
  2. Leverage Large-Scale Collaborative Research Roadmapping Efforts
  3. Increase the Body of Evidence on Emerging Therapeutic Solutions
  4. Ensure Full Implementation of Important Mental Health Legislation

The VAC members enjoyed sharing the perspectives of Veterans and caregivers on living with the invisible wounds and how a new approach to research can help drive meaningful progress in diagnosis and treatment.

Brain Health Nexus - February 8-9, 2022
Convening Global Leaders in Brain Health

The Brain Health Nexus Steering Committee was launched this Fall. The Steering Committee is composed of international leaders across the brain health ecosystem to establish and drive a framework for developing an actionable roadmapping strategic and operational plan, based on collective experience.

Brain Health Nexus Founding Steering Committee

The growing mental health consequences of the pandemic have highlighted a need for a renewed emphasis on brain health.

Brain Health NexusThe Brain Health Nexus will convene more than 200 global thought leaders across the brain health ecosystem, including experts from research organizations and other non-profits, finance, government, technology, patient advocacy groups, industry, and healthcare, to design and launch a science and technology roadmap for collective action to combat the growing global burden of brain disease.

This is an invitation-only event, contact us for more information.

Sponsorship opportunities are available now.
