Veterans Brain Health Progress Report

An Important Message From CEO & President Dr. Magali Haas

Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues,

Dr. Magali HaasOn Veterans Day, we pause to thank all Veterans across America for their service to our country. The challenges that our Veterans face after they return home are the focus of our work every day. As we honor their dedication and sacrifice, we strengthen our commitment to finding solutions for the invisible wounds of war.

In honor of Veterans Day, we’d like to share thoughts from our Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) on their important role in helping to advance solutions for brain trauma in order to prevent suicide among Veterans and service members. Watch the conversation with our VAC below.

In this progress report, I’m excited to share with you the momentum that is growing around our mission to advance solutions for the invisible wounds.

We are at a crossroads of traumatic brain injury (TBI) research. Last month, we hosted the Brain Trauma Blueprint Action Summit, bringing together leaders across government, academia, foundations, industry, and individuals with lived experience to advance a TBI Precision Research Roadmap.

To tackle the gaps in TBI diagnostics and treatments, we need to work together. We’re thrilled to announce the TBI Action Coalition – a new community coordination model to accelerate a first generation of diagnostics and treatments for traumatic brain injury. The TBI Action Coalition is a member-driven organization dedicated to executing a consensus Research Roadmap, ensuring progress toward clearly delineated goals & objectives.

On Veterans Day, please consider becoming a sponsor or member of the TBI Action Coalition. Join us in this critical fight for our Veterans who have made countless sacrifices protecting our freedom. It’s our responsibility to take care of them, today and every day.

Strength and Honor,

Magali Haas, MD, PhD

Announcing a new community coordination model to accelerate a first generation of diagnostics and treatments for traumatic brain injury

We are at a crossroads of TBI Research. While there has been increased awareness and funding, we have not made enough progress.

The time is now to embark on a new model of research, where researchers, the government, industry and those with lived experiences come together to focused on achieving specific and measurable objectives that will transform the lives of people who suffer a TBI.

We ask that you join us in this critical fight for our Veterans and others who have suffered long enough and become a Member of the TBI Action Coalition.

2022 Advocacy Highlights

Expanding healthcare for Veterans exposed to toxic substances

CVB applauds the signing of the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022 into law, which will provide expanded health care benefits to millions of veterans exposed to toxic substances including presumptive coverage for brain health conditions such as brain cancer, head cancer and Glioblastoma. CVB was proud to advocate for the passage of this important bill, particularly section 508, which will direct the National Academies to study the possible relationship between toxic exposures and mental health outcomes such as TBI and PTSD.

Translating research findings into healthcare for Veterans

The VA announced the launch of the Scott Hannon Initiative for Precision Mental Health to drive biomarker research focused on mental health conditions, promote data sharing, and speed the translation of research findings to care for Veterans. We're proud to have advocated for this important step toward precision medicine for Veterans' health.
