Data Engineer/Data Product Owner, BRAINCommons

Cohen Veterans Bioscience (CVB) is seeking an experienced Data Engineer/Data Product Owner for BRAINCommons to support the planning and implementation of the automated data ingestion pipeline for CVB’s growing cloud-based data sharing and analytics platform, the BRAINCommons.

Reports to: Executive Director, BRAINCommons

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and provide quality control for data prepared and submitted by other parties
  • Ensure data is generated, received, harmonized and structured in a timely and efficient manner · Development and execution of an automated process for conversion of data to a format acceptable for submission to the data sharing platform
  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for the data analytics and visualization components of the product
  • Develop and implement approved best practices, support the definition of new data standards, data models, terminologies, and ontologies; desire to learn about and seek new datasets
  • Maintenance and revision of a brain disease data model by conforming with external vocabularies and data standards
  • Provide user trainings on data model concepts, preparation and submission
  • Ability to function within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, data scientists, technology, developers and terminology experts
  • Participate in daily meetings to support Agile development environment

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Information Science or Computer Science with at least 5 years of experience. PhD preferred.
  • Expertise in curating and harmonizing data collected from various sources (e.g., wearables, sensors, EHRs, registries, etc.) and working with multiple data types (e.g., clinical observations, genetic, multi-omic, neuroimaging, etc.).
  • Minimum 3+ years’ of software engineering including significant product development experience with numerous project successes demonstrating a strong aptitude in all aspects of data integration and data warehousing.
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in database concepts, logical modeling, physical design, and database configuration and optimization; specifically graph models
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in scientific data management tools and techniques, informatics systems, and managing scientific stakeholder relationships is highly desirable.
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience writing scripting languages in Windows and UNIX-based operating systems; familiarity with a scripting language (e.g., Perl or Python) or a statistical programming environment (e.g., R).
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience with cloud computing platforms e.g., AWS/Google Cloud Compute.
  • Experience working in large and complex big data environments with deep data science and analytics.
  • Experience leading design thinking team discussions (e.g., workshops) leveraging knowledge of data management and data science for defining, designing, and implementing components with multi-stakeholder groups.
  • Experience performing hands-on data exploration, modeling, and assessment of data needs for outputs that are insightful and actionable.

Required Skills:

  • Expertise in data standards, semantics, terminologies, ontologies, and best practices for data governance (OHDSI/OMOP a must, NIH CDEs, CDISC, FHIR, etc. preferred) in neuroscience/neurology.
  • Expertise with cloud technologies (AWS a must), analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Expertise with ETL tools development
  • Experience with neuroscience concepts, dashboard and data visualization, and data storytelling
  • Experience in using Jira, Git, and Confluence as MUST.
  • Knowledge of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data guiding principles
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to drive multi-disciplinary working groups to identify requirements for product solutions related to data sharing and analytics
  • Possess a sense of urgency, strong organizational and follow-up skills
  • Must be self-directed and able to work independently.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time

Position Location:

New York City, New York, or Cambridge, MA are preferred; remote is possible. Authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Contractor also considered.
