2023 Best Negative Data Prize in Clinical Neuroscience

Cohen Veterans Bioscience (CVB) and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) welcome your submissions for the 2023 Best Negative Data Prize in Clinical Neuroscience.

The prize recognizes the researcher or research group whose publication in clinical neuroscience best exemplifies clinical data where the results do not confirm the expected outcomes or original hypotheses or results that challenge a long-standing clinical precedent.

All submissions must meet the following criteria:

  • Written in English and published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal that is currently listed by Web of Science and/or Scopus
  • Published after March 1, 2018
  • Reports the results of a human study (or set of studies) in the field of neuroscience
  • Not a review, meta-analysis, systematic review, short communication or case report
  • Is a full-length randomized clinical trial with detailed materials and methods section(s) (within the body of the paper or as supplementary information).

In addition to the above-mentioned criteria, each submission will be rigorously evaluated by a Prize Review Committee, comprised of members of the ECNP prize committee and CVB. The multi-step review process will evaluate each submission based on the data analysis and statistics, adherence to research rigor standards, a technical review of the materials and methods used in the study, and a field-specific scientific review by two subject matter experts.

Submissions for the 2023 Best Negative Data Prize in Clinical Neuroscience will be accepted from March 30, 2023, and close on May 21, 2023. The award itself is a monetary prize of $10,000, made available through the generous sponsorship support provided by CVB. The review committee will select and inform the winner by August 1, 2023. The public announcement and presentation of the prize will take place at the ECNP Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on October 7-10, 2023, where the winner will be expected to present a talk about his or her negative data results paper.

Creating a will and revocable trust is a smart way to provide for your loved ones and the causes you care about. A gift in your will or trust, often referred to as a charitable legacy, allows you to make a significant impact advancing brain health by fast-tracking precision diagnostics and tailored therapeutics to help lead the way to cure “invisible wounds” for the millions of veterans, service members, first responders, and civilians who suffer from trauma-related conditions. Legacies to charitable organizations are not subject to estate tax.

You can also designate Cohen Veterans Bioscience as a beneficiary of your accounts, including brokerage and retirement accounts, to receive distributions upon your death. This is a quick and easy way to remember a charity in your estate plan, and a gift from a retirement account can have significant income tax (as well as estate tax) benefits at death.

How It Works

  1. You can provide now for a future gift to Cohen Veterans Bioscience by including a legacy provision in your will or revocable trust or by designating Cohen Veterans Bioscience as a full or partial beneficiary of your retirement plan.
  2. Your will, trust, or retirement plan directs assets to your heirs.
  3. Your will, trust, or retirement plan directs a legacy or distribution to Cohen Veterans Bioscience.

Benefits

  • You can name your gift after yourself or a loved one.
  • Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime.
  • You can modify your legacy if your circumstances change.
  • There is no upper-limit on the estate tax deductions that can be taken for charitable legacies.
  • You can designate all or a percentage of a bank, brokerage, or retirement account and can change your beneficiaries at any time. There is no charge to update your beneficiary form. Donating assets from a retirement account can also minimize the income tax obligations of your estate (in addition to the charitable estate tax deduction), resulting in more assets passing to your heirs and charitable gift recipients.

Our country’s heroes are increasingly taking their own lives as a result of the invisible wounds of war. Tristan Wimmer—a Marine Veteran Infantryman and Scout Sniper—has made it his mission to bring awareness to the epidemic of suicide among Veterans. Tristan’s own brother, a Raider and Recon Marine Veteran, struggled with TBI-related depression and anxiety for nearly a decade before he ultimately succumbed to suicide.

Through 22 Jumps, a series of fundraising events where Veterans and others BASE jump 22 times in a single day, Tristan brings new hope to this epidemic by partnering with our organization to raise money for research and new effective solutions for all patients living with the effects of TBI.

Traumatic Brain Injury Can Be an Underlying Cause of Suicide

TBI is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal functioning of the brain. TBIs can range from mild, with a brief change in mental status or consciousness (commonly called concussions), to severe, with an extended period of unconsciousness or memory loss. TBIs are a risk factor for suicide. Currently, there are few available treatments for severe brain injuries.

Today, there are few diagnostics and treatments for the invisible wounds of brain trauma, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At Cohen Veterans Bioscience (CVB), our hope is that one day in the near future, no one who experiences brain trauma will suffer the effects for a lifetime. We are working to research the brain’s underlying biological processes and accelerate solutions for patients.

We’re making progress, but we can’t do it alone.

Across the country, Veterans, first responders, and everyday heroes are using their hobbies and passions to help fund our transformative research.

What makes fundraising for CVB different?

100% of all unrestricted donations to Cohen Veterans Bioscience go toward our research to fast-track diagnostics and treatments for brain disorders.
