Animal Modeling 101

What are animal models and why are they used in research? This webinar provided a general overview of animal models, the various ways that they are generated, and their invaluable contribution to scientific discovery.

We explored model systems studied for post-traumatic stress disorder. We discussed current limitations of existing animal models and how Cohen Veterans Bioscience is going beyond these limitations. Ethical considerations of using animals in research and how scientists and institutions ensure high levels of compliance and concern for animal welfare were also examined.

Patricia Kabitzke, PhD
Senior Scientific Program Manager, Cohen Veterans Bioscience

Patricia Kabitzke is a behavioral neuroscientist, working on preclinical models of neuropsychiatric and developmental diseases such as PTSD, schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorder. She has worked collaboratively with scientists across academia, biotech, big pharma, and nonprofit organizations, contributing expertise in study design, assay development, analysis, and offering creative solutions to complex problems.

Dr. Kabitzke trained in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University with Dr. Christoph Wiedenmayer and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Developmental Neuroscience and Behavior with Dr. Peter Balsam. More recently, she spearheaded and managed the Developmental Disorders group at PsychoGenics under the tutelage of Dr. Daniela Brunner.

In addition to her research, Dr. Kabitzke is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Comparative Psychology and is committed to the education and mentorship of future scientists, particularly women and underrepresented minorities.
